José González – Against The Dying Of The Light Album Packaging Design

Packaging design for Against The Dying Of The Light – the fifth studio album by Swedish singer-songwriter José González, released via City Slang in Europe and Mute in North America.

The project encompassed the complete visual packaging system across LP and CD formats, translating an intimate and atmospheric visual concept into a cohesive physical release. Working with typography, pacing, structure, and sequencing, the aim was to create a tactile and immersive visual experience that unfolded throughout the packaging.

The illustrations were created by Hannele Fernström, based on a visual concept developed together with José González. My role focused on shaping and extending this material into a complete packaging design system across all formats and applications.

The title typography is based on an early, unfinished draft of a hand-drawn gothic typeface I had been developing over the previous year. At the time, the font did not yet exist as a functioning typeface – each letter, including multiple alternate variations, was manually composed and applied throughout the design, allowing for a more organic and shifting typographic expression.

The assignment also included digital single artwork and design supervision across marketing materials, coordinating with teams in both Europe and the US.

This marked my fifth album production together with José González, continuing a long-term creative collaboration spanning multiple releases and visual identities.
